I’m Nicola Matthews and I’m asking for your support to be a Labour candidate for South West Wales.
I grew up in Swansea in a Labour family and some of my earliest memories are of leafleting for my gran, a local councillor. My parents brought us up to believe that we should do whatever we could to help other people and support our community.
I remember my family meeting Mother Theresa when she visited Swansea and asked the community to support her order in the building of homeless shelter. My gran and my father secured land and grants to build the shelter, and we’ve supported it with donations ever since.
I’ve always loved getting involved in supporting charities and for the last few years I have been on the board of the Paul Popham Fund, supporting renal patients in Wales, organising events and fundraising, and getting to work with some inspiring people who give so much to their communities.
I have worked for an MS and currently work for an MP, supporting constituents with casework, helping to set up community groups, and campaigning local and national issues.
In my role I’ve seen first-hand impact that a decade of Tory austerity has had on our communities, but I’ve also seen the impact our movement can have to make a real change. Last summer I ran a holiday hunger program, feeding 200 children daily for the last few weeks of the summer holidays, securing funding from local business and getting the message out on local radio leading to donations from across Swansea.
I’m passionate about bringing people together and making a difference. Whether it’s raising money for charity or getting out on the doorstep campaigning for the party I have track-record of delivery and the energy to do what it takes to keep our region Labour.
I’m looking forward to speaking to as many members as possible over the course of this campaign and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
